- Erykah Badu -

here is perhaps one story that explains Erykah Badu’s cyclical outlook on her new album, New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh, and it involves a visit to a Santeria priest in Cuba in 1999. Dressed for the occasion, Badu wore an all-white dress and, despite the humid weather, her signature towering head wrap. As she sat on the dusty sidewalk waiting to enter the house of Ifa, a young man who could best be described as curious looking barreled down next to her, popped open a can of beer, lit a cigarette, and began making small talk to another guy who Badu assumed was also waiting for a reading.

Soon after, the house door opened and a charming old lady welcomed her; the young man, dressed in white cut-off denim shorts and a faded American sportswear jersey, followed them into the house.

Uncertain of his reason for being there, Badu became reserved and uncomfortable with the idea of someone else sitting in on her reading. And then it dawned on her: This young man was the priest. He came from a long line of respected priests. He didn’t have to wear fancy garments, or signal his faith with outward expressions. He just was. From that moment on, Badu’s head wrap came off — both figuratively and literally.

When Badu says “return of the ankh,” she doesn’t mean she’s returning to wearing the head wrap or any other accessory that evokes 1997’s Baduizm epoch. She means much more. The return of the ankh is the return of a feeling, what makes her creative, what makes her passionate, what makes her Badu.

Born Erica Wright on February 26, 1971 in Dallas, Texas, Erykah Badu inherited a taste for music from her mother Kolleen Wright, who introduced her to multiple genres of music (Joni Mitchell, Parliament-Funkadelic, Pink Floyd, Phoebe Snow, Chaka Khan). At the tender age of four, Badu began singing and dancing in productions at the local Dallas Theatre Centre. It wasn’t until her acting debut in the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreational Center’s musical production of “Really Rosie,” directed by her godmother Gwen Hargrove, that Badu realized she was a natural performer. “I played Alligator,” Badu says, “and at 6 years old, I got my first standing ovation. I knew I wanted to bring people to their feet from that point on.

Badu stayed true to her artistic leanings and enrolled at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts in the late ’80s. Tomboyish and a bit of a class clown, Badu devoted most of her time to perfecting her dance form, studying the techniques of Martha Graham and Katherine Dunham, as well as practicing ballet, tap, and modern dance. Badu also sharpened her Hip-Hop skills, freestyling on the Dallas radio station 90.9 FM KNON under the name Apples the Alchemist until she eventually changed the spelling of her name from “Erica Wright” to “Erykah Badu,” “kah” being Kemetic (Egyptian) for a human’s vital energy or “inner-self” and “ba-du” after her favorite jazz scat-sound. But later, Badu would discover that her chosen name holds a far deeper meaning.

Badu enrolled at Grambling State University, where she majored in theater and minored in Quantum Physics. She left in 1993 to pursue music full-time. During the day, she taught drama and dance at the South Dallas Cultural Center and worked as a coffeehouse waitress. At night, she recorded and performed songs like “Appletree,” produced by her cousin Robert “Free” Bradford. In 1994, her 19-song demo caught the attention of aspiring record executive Kedar Massenburg by way of the SXSW music festival.

Massenburg signed her to his upstart label Kedar Entertainment. The company eventually merged with Motown/Universal and Badu started opening for D’Angelo, prepping the world for the massive Neo soul movement to come.

Erykah Badu

The New York Times described Badu’s groundbreaking debut, 1997’s Baduizm, as “traditional soul vocals, staccato hip-hop rhythms and laid-back jazzy grooves.” Yet, hindsight reveals that Badu’s debut was more than just an album, it was the introduction of a new lifestyle. The music evoked speakeasies, incense, head wraps, and boho coffee shop culture all in one easy breath. Propelled by the lead single “On & On,” the album went multi-platinum, winning her two Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Album. Badu topped Rolling Stone’s Reader’s poll for Best R&B Artist, and Entertainment Weekly named her Best New Female Singer of 1997.

The year yielded more blessings as Badu gave birth to her first child, Seven Sirius, whose father is the legendary Andre Benjamin of OutKast on the same day that her second LP, 1997’s Live, was released in the U.S. Live rode the wave of Baduizm’s success, going double-platinum. On the album, Badu showed that she could not be categorized, as the improvised “Tyrone” became a megahit, peaking at No. 1 for six weeks straight.

In addition to reinforcing her reputation as a dynamic live performer, Badu’s big screen debut as Rose Rose in the 1999 film The Cider House Rules added another credit to her brown bag of artistic miscellany. And in 2000, she opened her trophy cabinet once again to welcome a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for her appearance on “You Got Me” by The Roots.

These checkpoints only heightened anticipation for Badu’s second studio album, 2000’s Mama’s Gun. A rich assembly of soul, funk, and organic Hip-Hop textures, Mama’s Gun achieved platinum status and topped the R&B charts for seven weeks bolstered by the album’s lead single “Bag Lady.” The song’s video paid homage to Ntozake Shange’s award-winning play, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf,” with Badu presenting a “choreopoem” performed by herself and four other dancers. The album also marked the beginning of her collaborations with the late J Dilla, who produced “Didn’t Cha Know” and “Kiss Me On My Neck (Hesi),” and to whom Badu pays tribute on a track called “Telephone” from 2008’s New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War. Capped off with the emotional hit “Green Eyes,” Mama’s Gun packed a graceful combination of potent lyrics and stirring melisma, surpassing Baduizm’s first week numbers with more than 190,000 copies sold.

In the three years between Mama’s Gun and Badu’s next release, 2003’s Worldwide Underground, the singer-songwriter went on her affectionately dubbed “The Frustrated Artist” tour to inspire new material for the album. On the CD—which was recorded in Badu’s mobile recording studio on her tour bus and features guest appearances by Lenny Kravitz, Caron Wheeler, and Zap Mama—Badu would also debut her new production team, FREAQuency (Badu, James Poyser, Rashad “Ringo-Tumbling Dice” Smith, and R.C. Williams). By September 2003, Worldwide Underground, an experimental, atmospheric jam session, was ready for release. In keeping with her track record for collaborating with Hip-Hop’s finest, Worldwide Underground found Badu enjoying critical acclaim for the crunk “Danger” and “Love of My Life Worldwide,” which featured femcees du jour Bahamadia, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and soul singer Angie Stone.

Badu also kept busy outside of the lab. In 2003, she founded her non-profit group, B.L.I.N.D. (Beautiful Love Incorporated Non-Profit Development), which is geared toward creating social change through economic, artistic, and cultural development. She also transformed the legendary Forest Theater in South Dallas into a headquarters for live shows and charity benefits. “When I came home, I saw the bad condition the building was in,” says Badu. “I felt like it was my job to reestablish music there, to reformat the whole thing and refit it.” Among B.L.I.N.D.’s many accomplishments, the organization has provided arts, crafts, and dance classes to children displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

In 2004, Badu gave birth to her daughter Puma Sabti, who she describes as a “mini-me.” In September of that same year, Badu appeared in the Brooklyn-based concert documentary Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, performing an animated set that included the hits “Back in the Day (Puff)” and the Grammy-winning smash “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop).” Along with Queen Latifah and Jill Scott, Badu also founded a successful summer festival tour called Sugar Water. Also in 2004, Badu’s charitable efforts helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the scholarship fund at St. Phillips School and Community Center in Dallas, Texas.

Badu flexed her entrepreneurial muscles with the launch of her own label, Control FreaQ, in 2005. The label, whose mission is to “free the slaves and the slave masters” by allowing signed artists to own their own masters in a 10-year conversion deal, operates primarily as a production house. Control FreaQ’s first project is developing New Orleans-born MC/Lyricist Jay Electronica. The label also produces remixed records and supports Badu’s side projects such as The Cannabinoids, the group she founded with Dallas-based DJs, musicians and beatsmiths, which is an improvisation production akin to a live “remix” set.

In 2008, as the U.S. engaged in the Iraq War and the nation prepared for an historic presidential election, Badu presented her own offering for the evolving times with New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War. Badu’s fourth studio album and the first installment of the two-part New Amerykah series kept Badu’s Hip-Hop spirit kindled. New Amerykah Part One boasts beats from the best soundsmiths in the game — including Madlib, 9th Wonder, Shafiq Husayn (for Sa-Ra Creative Partners), Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson of The Roots, James Poyser, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Mike “Chav” Chavaria. With the singles “Honey” and “The Healer” generating significant cyberspace buzz, Badu reclaimed her cherished throne as a soul music phenom. New Amerykah Part One debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and Rolling Stone named it one of the year’s best albums. For the once self-proclaimed “analog girl,” Badu is now pushing the limits of the digital world. On February 1, 2009, Badu and boyfriend Jay Electronica blogged about the birth of their daughter Mars Merkab in real-time on the micro-blogging site Twitter, thus becoming the first celebrity couple to ever Tweet the birth of a child.

In 2010, Badu announced yet another new arrival: New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh. Whereas Part One was social and political in tone, Part Two taps into the more romantic and emotional side of Badu. “It reminds me of the days of Baduizm,” she says. “It’s just about beats and rhymes in a cipher.”

Indeed, diehard fans of Badu will love New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh and newcomers to Badu’s world will be curiously intrigued by the mystique and authenticity of an artist who is totally comfortable in her own skin. Whether directing a dope music video or exposing her vulnerabilities in rhyme, Badu transcends image. Just like the Santeria priest she met in Cuba, Badu no longer tries to be, she just is.

ina Davis, is a composer, songwriter, spoken word poet, and proudly one of few aspiring female producers in NC. She is no stranger to music as she has been writing and composing for over two decades. She is known for her blended compilations of Jazz and R&B that will be sure to indulge the senses. Her musical influences include Prince, Dave Hollister, Brian Culbertson, Kirk Whalum, and a host of others. She grew up playing the piano in church and her continued desire to play led her to her initial debut as a keyboard player with the Armed Forces jazz band. While serving abroad, she later established Black Ivory Ink, LLC and emerged as an independent artist with the release of her first album Falling in Love Again produced by Jeffery Smith which has since been retired. Her love for music has allowed her to showcase her talents in Hawaii, Panama, and Europe. Tina also celebrated the international release of three singles one of which she produced. Her music has been featured on the Paul Miller Soul Unsigned Show, a branch of BBC Radio online. She was also the cover story of Jamsource Magazine and featured in Dysfunkshion magazine, a Hawaii lifestyle and fashion publication.

Bio:
I have over 19 years of experience with analog and digital recording and am now a graduate of the Los Angeles Recording School in Music Production. I am proud to say that I graduated Summa Cum Laude and was accepted into the National Honor Society of the Entertainment Arts.

That learning experience has allowed me the opportunity to stay abreast of the newest digital recording platforms to help me maintain my relevancy in the independent music field. As shown in my bio, my first album has been retired from the marketplace as I move in a different direction for my future music endeavors. My goal is to use my music as an avenue to touch on the things we all may go through in life. The spoken word version of Love Shouldn't Hurt So Bad was the step in starting my musical journey.

As far as my military experience, I served a total of 26 years counting my delayed entry. I worked as a medical laboratory technician conducting bacterial toxin research, student coordinator for the George Washington University medical laboratory technician program, as management in large military medical center labs, as well as laboratory support for the combat hospital during Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. Since I retired, I currently work as a lead clinical laboratory scientist in microbiology, hematology, and chemistry as a federal employee. I've also completed my Masters in Occupational Safety and Health and hold the Graduate Safety Practitioner designation with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. My plans to pursue a Doctorate in Public Health have been deferred so that I may focus on my first love, music.

Hobbies- Astrophotography-I enjoy studying and photographing deep sky objects and planets. My long-term goal is to one day work at NASA in any of the fields in astrophysics or in the outgassing laboratory.

Woodworking- My father gave me my first set of tools and I helped him build my playhouse as a child. I still have the love of building now after all of these years. If I can't find it, I will build it.

Leatherworking- My current project includes leather book covers and passport covers.

I am currently working on my instrumental album "Mixed Emotions" which will be a blended genre consisting of Jazz and R&B. This will be the first project I plan to produce on my own with "Feelings" as the first single. The release date is to be determined pending project completion. Augusta Savage

by Bailie Staton

he 16-foot-high sculpture amazed visitors to the 1939 World’s Fair that year in the Flushing Meadows area of New York City.

It commemorated the contributions of black music to America and resembled a giant harp. Standing as the harp’s strings were 12 black figures standing at graduated heights on the sounding board, which was formed as the hand and arm of God.

The Harp by Augusta Savage

The Harp was certainly black sculptor Augusta Savage’s most monumental work. It also represented the artistic and musical genius that had emanated from Northeast Florida in the early 20th century.

For not only was Savage born in Green Cove Springs in 1892, she relied upon the famous black anthem “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” penned by Jacksonville’s Rosamond and James Weldon Johnson, as her inspiration for The Harp.

“Some people call it The Harp, some people call it The Voice and some just call it ‘Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,’” said Eugene Francis with the Friends of Augusta Savage Arts and Community Center. Its intent was to symbolize and commemorate the contributions of black musicians.

Sadly, after the fair the plaster-cast sculpture was destroyed due to a lack of funds to cast it in bronze.

Although The Harp was Savage’s last major commissioned work, her previous work as a sculptor and member of the New York artistic scene have cast her as a luminary among the 20th century artists.

“She was one of the major players under the New Negro movement just prior to the Harlem Renaissance,” Francis said.

Savage grew up in a large family and entertained herself by playing with clay she found in her hometown. The young girl soon fell in love with sculpting clay, much to the dismay of her minister father and the larger art world, which did not recognize her talent early on because of her race.

Little did her parents know that their daughter would combat poverty, racism and sexual discrimination to become one of the leading artists of the Harlem Renaissance.

In 1907, 15-year-old Savage married her first husband, John T. Moore, and had her only child, Irene, at just 16

Gamin by Augusta Savage

years old. The marriage didn’t last long though as Moore died a few years later.

In 1915, Savage and her daughter moved to West Palm Beach where Savage met her second husband, James Savage. With a new husband and a new good source of clay, Savage blossomed in West Palm Beach.

She created a group of sculptures that she entered into the annual South Florida Fair, they were well received, winning her the favor of the fair’s superintendent, George Graham Curie, who was very supportive of her work. He even encouraged her to go study art, despite the racial discrimination dividing the country.

In the early 1920s, Savage divorced her husband and moved to Jacksonville. She planned to create sculptures of famous black residents by commission between the years of 1920 and 1921, but the plan did not succeed.

She then decided to take a new route at the end of 1921. Dropping her daughter off at her parent’s two-story house on Middleburg Avenue in Green Cove Springs, she headed for New York City.

When she arrived, she enrolled at the tuition-free school of Cooper Union to study sculpture.

School faculty were amazed at her talent and waived tuition for some of her courses. The school also presented her with a scholarship to help with living expenses.

“She was a woman, which was already difficult as an artist. On top of that she was black, that’s why she became so successful. She defeated the odds,” said Imani Phillips, archival assistant at the Jacksonville Historical Society.

Average students at Cooper Union graduated in four years, however, the quick-learning and talented Savage graduated in three.

In 1923, Savage married her last husband, Robert Lincoln Poston, who later died the following year.

In the same year she married Poston, she decided to apply for a summer art program just outside of Paris called Fontainebleu.

One hundred artists were invited to study there, but once her application was submitted, the board rejected her because of her race.

“African-American artists just they allowed into most art schools,” Phillips said. “Their work just wasn’t considered professional, so it was just rejected. And public museums and art studios didn’t want to show African-American art.”

Enraged, Savage brought the subject to the press during the time of intense segregation and was on the front headlines of many papers. Despite the publicity, the decision remained unchanged.

However, an American sculptor and a member of the Fontainebleu’s admissions committee, Herman A. MacNeil, attempted to make amends and invited Savage to come work with him at his Long Island studio.

Once back in New York, Savage’s star began to rise. She made a name for herself by sculpting famous people including W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey. Both of these works were hailed in the art world for their power and dynamism.

In 1929, a sculpture that had a big impact in the art world was of her nephew, Ellis Ford, titled Gamin.

On the basis of these notable works she received the Julius Rosenwald fellowship that finally allowed her to study in Paris from 1929 to 1931.

he experience and excitement are overflowing with memories of exposing the Arts and National News for the past thirty-five are more years. When I moved to Texas back in 1983 from California, It was a time in my life that I was looking for change and my mother moved to San Antonio, Texas, after re-marrying, which was a door opening opportunity for me to explore the Lone Star State.

Now how I got involved in the media was by chance, sitting at the bus stop on the corner of Commerce St. and Hackberry, deep eastside of San Antonio. As I sit there, checking out the scenery I notice a black owned business behind me which caught my attention, it was one of the oldest black newspaper in Texas, the San Antonio Register, established in 1931 by Valmo Bellinger, after his retirement Edwin Glosson purchased the newspaper in 1979 and took over the as Editor and publisher of the newspaper. As it featured stories of the city, it was the community’s news outlet for the small and large black owned businesses. There was a connection nationally and internationally with national press releases stemming from covering stories on politics, entertainment and local community news. I saw and learned that this was something that I would really enjoy with the educational and fun experience of exploring the media world. Now back then it was more manual work of typesetting, cutting and layout, running to the press before deadline, but the opportunity to cover historical events in the city gave me the chance to meet celebrities from film, sports and political side.

After working for the Register twenty-two years I learned firsthand the business, all awhile loving the experience and all the lifelong friends I met along the way, but after visiting Houston on several occasion, I discovered a whole new arena of entertainment and big city life and decided to step out of my comfort zone and move. Now I didn’t find a job in the line of work I was use to and done various professions that just was not feeling that void, and as I just ran my course in life I came in contact with one of Houston black publication the Observer and made a connection with the staff, which opened the door of me making the decision to start my own publication after sitting down to talk shop with the editor, whom also suggested that I start my own also.

The beginning of Jamsource Runway Magazine established 2001 for the sole purpose of exposing the entertainment industry in the Houston and surrounding area, then Nationally soon after with discovering untapped talent in some of the nation cities. As the publication grew reaching a diverse audience by exposing country, blues/soul, zydeco, jazz, hip-hop rap and rock as my taste for music goes across the board with delight as it set the mood throughout the day. The entertainment industry covers a wide playing field and soon exploring into the fashion industry and incorporating it into the publication was one that opened a pandora box of fashion, and those that create it from designers to promoters from around the States to Africa. As Jamsource Runway Magazine has a passion for supporting the community it has evolved in to participating in community event with the non-profit organizations around the city, and also organize an annual Back-to-School and Christmas Drive each year with now partnering with No Sister Left Behind, 501c Non-Profit Organization, The BOSS Women, Inc. Organization, C. Allen Productions, Inc. and Melody of Hope.

I could go on forever with details on my journey creating Jamsource Runway Magazine, but it would go on and on, I just want to say that my adventure continues on discovering and exposing the Arts In All It’s Form to the readers. I would like to thank all those who have help make it possible a Dream that still in progress now for Eighteen Years.

Transitions of the Brand

JAMSOURCE Magazine logo found on many of the earlier publications. Ms. Baker always reached out to various fashion intrests by featuring them in the Jamsource Magazine. She came up with the idea of creating her own fashion brand, ( The Runway Fashion Source ).

The Runway Fashion Source embodies fashion artists of all walks of life from the novice to the professionals. It was then Ms. Baker decided to combine the two in her publication. She had developed different categories ideas under the fashion heading.

Beautiful Bold Curves, Bold & Distinqished, Tu Fli Revolution and Pre TEENS Growing With Style are some of the fashion shows Ms. Baker spear-headed. Fashion Designers, Models, Make-Up Artist, Photographers, etc were able to show their talent which opened doors for them to participate in other shows given by Fashion Agencies.

You might see the initials (JSRW) Jamsource / Runway Magazine. However there was a need to combine the two and bring it under one single brand which is present to the right. Ms. Baker has successfully opened doors for artists local and abroad. If you are giving an event and would like it to appear in the JAMSOURCE / RUNWAY Magazine see below.

A Model Life
the Pat Cleveland interview
by Charlie Siddick

magine waking up to an email asking you whether you’d like to interview one of your idols… it’s every writer’s wet dream. That’s what happened to me recently on a gloomy and otherwise non-remarkable December day, “ThandieKay would probably love an interview with Pat Cleveland?” read the subject line, followed by a brief description of Pat’s achievements and accolades, which let me tell you are hard to compress. “Yes, ThandieKay would love to interview Pat Cleveland” I hastily responded without consulting either Thandie or Kay, because I mean, Pat’s the perfect fit- and one of the world’s first ‘African-American’ supermodels, and certainly the most fabulous.

Pat Cleveland

Pat made a name for herself in the late 60s and 70s as one of the first models to achieve prominence as both a runway and print model. Close friends with the Studio 54 set; Cleveland was a muse to Warhol, Dali, Saint Laurent, Lagerfeld and Halston (to name but a few). Modelling allowed Pat to travel the world, mix with and inspire countless artists and celebrities.

Now in her late 60s, age hasn’t withered her beauty, spirit or energy; remaining a regular fixture on the catwalk and in advertising campaigns- as her daughter Anna continues the Cleveland modelling legacy- she has returned her focus to an early passion; that of painting.

Trailblazing Pat

Pat and I spoke over Facetime one evening, in the midst of a current show in London and preparing for others in the States. She tenderly guided me around her studio and home, showing me her diverse art collection and some of her own work.

Pat is bubbly, endearing and possesses a unique childlike combination of naiveté and excitability. Despite being reduced to a screen of grainy pixels teleported across oceans- Pat’s iconic bone structure still shines brightly. Her melodic and drawling voice possesses faint traces of her Harlem upbringing and draws one in; captivating and transporting you back with her to whichever glamorous and prodigious reminiscence she chooses to meditate upon.

They say you should never meet your idols as they’re just bound to disappoint. But it was honestly an honour to speak to Pat- an experience I’ll never forget- I feel changed by her advice and wisdom. We bonded over our heritage and our revelations from using Ancestry DNA, we were a scarily similar percentage of African and Scandinavian- she found 6 siblings through using the website! Her musings on modelling gave me a much-needed sense of artistic perspective on an industry I sometimes find too shallow and consumerist to bear.

Notice how she slips between the use of the personal pronoun ‘I’ and the objective ‘you;’ when she speaks of her experiences she formulates them as though she is relating advice. Pat’s lived a fascinating and unbelievable life and therefore we should all be able to learn something from her. Pat’s gregarious guide to living:

How did you first get into modelling?

I started out as a fashion designer when I was around 14/15, I was always obsessed with fashion and made my own clothes. I always participated in what I thought was nice looking, or beautiful, I loved the idea of going out and looking good; dressing up and feeling good. That’s what fashion is supposed to be- embodying living art.

One day when I was wearing one of my own designs, a woman on the subway told me to come to the Vogue office to show them some of my clothes, an editor saw them and said: “I’m taking these to Paris, to Givenchy!” Following that they gave my clothes a 2-page spread. It was stocked in (Henri) Bendel’s for a while, but it was so exhausting- I was a one-man show.

One day when I was at Vogue, they didn’t have a model so pointed at me and said- “you’ll do!” I was enamoured and thought why am I slaving away all night sewing? I thought this was fun, partly cause you get to be around people- all I wanted to do was see the clothes anyway…

What was the industry like at the time?

There was a division between photo girls and show (runway) girls at the time, there weren’t many show girls then, maybe 10 in the whole of NY. It was kind of like an elite fashion club. If you were black it was hard, and I was kind of in the middle, so no one knew what to do with me.

N.Y. April 1971 with Stephen Burrows in his East Village studio.

It didn’t really take off for me till I met a designer called Steven Burrows and the illustrator Antonio Lopez, they were so important to me, so hot and so fabulous and they sort of just included me in everything they did. That’s how I met Andy… we’d go out to the Village, to Sheraton square, people could see me and appreciate me more because of who I was with.

We were all coming up at the same time, these people made a real difference in my life; Karl Lagerfeld, Yves, Valentino, and Halston…definitely Halston.

What did the label “African-American” feel like for you- someone of mixed heritage, predominantly Swedish?

Pat Cleveland and Halston

The press referred to me as a ‘black’ model and I’d look at my skin and be like where’s the black? But I live in America where they separate you into black and white. Recently it’s become ok to be ‘mixed-race’, but before it was like: if you had one drop of black in you- you were black and it was meant with negative connotations whereas, I’ve always honoured it.

Africa is a big beautiful country, that’s inspired so many people; YSL, Picasso… everyone take their inspiration from Africa. And everyone has a ticket to ride- America’s a melting pot- everyone’s coming together to make a nice Mother colour.

I was out there in the beginning because they allowed me to be there, perhaps because I was lighter skinned- more palatable- but also because I’m just innately a fashion person.

Yes, I can tell you’re a fashion person, with your iconic fashion walk! How did you think the fashion industry has changed today? And do you think it’s for the better?

Time is precious; people don’t have time for romance anymore. That’s what my walk was- romantic. Romance is slow and moving- business is fast and competitive. The catwalk is more like a conveyer belt sometimes- you’ve got to get those groceries on the conveyer belt and out the other side! Fashion now, has so many more people involved- more people, more cameras.

It used to be quieter; an isolated art that had nothing to do with everybody from anywhere. It had more to do with ‘ladies’ and ‘gentleman’ from a certain part of society. I guess it’s a natural occurrence, things that were small and exclusive become large and accessible.

At the end of the day, it must be a good thing, as there are more opportunities for people to work at different levels of the industry. Fashion is a huge and powerful global industry. It’s opened up; it’s kinda like- do you just sell to the people taking limos? Or the people taking buses and trains?

What encouraged you to start focusing more of your energy on art and formally presenting your work?

My mom was a successful fine artist, she passed away two years ago, so I kinda figured-as she wasn’t looking over my shoulder telling me ‘that’s not how you do it’. I thought well she’s gone now- I’ll do what I want! When I paint I can feel how happy it made her. She painted until the very last minute, so I take that as a sign- a way to be happy. In a way, through art, her spirit still entertains me.

Does your mother’s artwork inspire you? How would you describe your work and your practice?

My mom was a fine portrait artist, whereas my work is more decorative and abstract. Partly because I live in the middle of nowhere and I don’t have many people around me when I paint. I’ve done portraits of my daughter (Anna Cleveland) and son. Of course, I love Sargeant! And really all the artists I used to mix with continue to influence my work.

I try and paint 2-3 works a day; I love colours so my palette tends to be bright and bold. When making art, you go through stuff, you look at all the masters, you go through it and absorb everything that everyone’s done, and you don’t try and do your own thing because you know it’s been done before! It’s all been done before, everything; portraiture, fine art- everything- pyramids, architecture… So what you have to do is not worry it’s all been done, and just do it anyway. Sometimes when I get up and get dressed for parties now, I think I’d love to get back to my paintings!

Pat Cleveland, Clown (2017) Paper on Paper Pat Cleveland, Still Life MetaMorphosis (2017), Paper on Paper

Clearly, you’re innately a creative, but spending so much time as a muse to other artists gave you awareness of both sides. Did being a model and therefore the object of another’s creative’s gaze feel problematic at the time? I sometimes find it tough being a passive participant in someone else’s vision.

You’re the important part, without you there is no image! You should feel grateful that they want you to be a part of their art. Identity isn’t a flat surface, there’s also the soul and the way you feel which is hard to capture in fashion photography. A model is there to invoke the spirit of the times. Your body is a work of art! A woman’s body, when you’re young… is the most beautiful thing in the world. These days there are disabled women modelling, transgender women, plus-size women- they’re all forms of beauty. Hieronymus Bosch/Sergeant– it’s just different forms of beauty. Whenever I model, I just feel honoured- like they really picked me?!- I better do a good job! I better work hard to make this image they see happen, as a team.

Rosé Champagne Pairings

he pink version of Champagne—in addition to looking festive—can pair with a wide range of foods, from hors d’oeuvres and cheeses to shellfish, poultry, and pastas with cream-based sauces. More often than not, rosé Champagnes are just as dry and minerally as their white counterparts and are made from the same three grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The real difference is the color, which is achieved by one of two methods. In the first method, a producer may choose to blend a little red wine with the base white. Champagne is the only appellation in France that allows the blending of red and white wine together. This process takes place before the second fermentation in the bottle, which gives Champagne its sparkle. Method two is called saignée, the French term for bleeding, since the color is derived—or bled—from the grape skins rather than from blending.

Rosé Champagne is great with dinner, not just hors d'oeuvres. Rosé sparkling wines, such as rosé Champagne, cava and sparkling wine from California, have the depth of flavor and richness to go with a wide range of main courses.

Beets give this creamy risotto stunning color and delicate sweetness. Grace Parisi suggests wearing rubber gloves and shredding the beets directly into a stainless steel bowl to avoid staining hands and countertops.

Chicken with Slow-Roasted Tomatoes and Cheesy Grits

As an accompaniment to her exceptionally crisp-skinned chicken, Marcia Kiesel roasts tomatoes until they're tender and sweet. She cleverly uses some of the tomatoes to enrich the savory jus.

Chicken Sofrito

For her sublime version of everyday chicken and rice, Marcia Kiesel coats chicken legs in chili powder and cooks rice with sofrito—a Spanish mixture of chopped onion, garlic and bell pepper. She bakes everything together in a skillet so that the delectable chicken juices flavor the rice, then broils the dish at the last minute to turn the chicken skin enticingly brown.

Pork Braised in Champagne Vinegar

Champagne vinegar, made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, gets its rich, mellow flavor from being aged in oak barrels, like wine. David Page uses J. LeBlanc Champagne vinegar (available from lobels.com) to braise this luscious bone-in pork shoulder that's also flavored with cumin, coriander and mustard seed.

Creamy Risotto with Edamame

Jeff Smith loves cooking with his children and often lets them pick the ingredients. "Kids come up with cool flavor combinations that an adult would never think of," he says. "I learn a lot that way." This risotto was created when Smith's daughter, Isabelle, tossed some Laughing Cow cheese into a pot of risotto. "t adds a lot of richness without making the dish taste too sharp," Smith says.

Puff-Pastry Tomato Tarts

Andreas Viestad's tarts have a flaky crust topped with tomatoes that become wonderfully sweet as they bake. Viestad likes to halve the tomatoes, but slicing them (as in this recipe) concentrates the flavor even more. The recipe was inspired by a dish at one of Viestad's favorite Cape Town restaurants, Savoy Cabbage.

Panko-Coated Chicken Schnitzel

Thomas Keller of the French Laundry in Yountville, California uses panko bread crumbs to give chicken a crunchy crust. "Pounding chicken breasts to a uniform thickness cuts down on cooking time," he says.

Costa Smeralda

Costa Smeralda (the name means Emerald in Italian and the ship is named after Sardinia's popular tourist coast), will be the Carnival Corp.-owned brand's first LNG (liquefied natural gas)-powered ship.

The 6,518-passenger (at maximum capacity) ship is currently being built in the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and will launch in October 2019. A sister ship will be delivered by Meyer Turku in 2021.

Costa Smerelda will weigh in at 182,700 gross tons and will have 2,612 cabins. It is one of seven new LNG-powered ships ordered by Carnival Corp. -- the first will be German-based brand AIDAnova which launches in fall 2018. U.K. line P&O Cruises also has a LNG-powered ship on order, which will launch in 2020.

LNG is the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel. It will be stored in special tanks onboard the ship and will be used to generate 100 percent of the energy required for navigation and onboard services, thanks to dual-fuel hybrid engines. The use of LNG is a major innovation in terms of environmental impact, as it will significantly reduce exhaust gas emissions, in particular sulphur, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and particulate matter.

Costa hasn't released many details on what to expect onboard Smeralda, but the line has revealed that the cabins will be designed by Milan-based architectural studio Dordoni Architetti. The firm is one of four commissioned to design the ship, and the overall design will be led by Adam D. Tihany, who has worked on numerous ships including Celebrity's Solstice class and Seabourn Encore and Ovation.

The designs will be based on Italian cities with each deck represented by a well-known destination. Cabins will feature a photographic panel with an embedded television depicting an Italian city view. Bathroom walls will be cladded to look like marble and a full height window in the shower will be designed to create the feel of more space and improve lighting. All the cabin furniture will be custom made by leading Italian furniture manufacturers.

Costa Smeralda will sail in the Western Mediterranean, with itineraries on sale in early 2018. The two LNG Costa ships -- as well as two new ships for AIDA Cruises -- are part of a multibillion dollar contract signed with the two Meyer shipyards in Turku (Finland) and Papenburg (Germany).

OUR COMMUNITY

The West End community of Atlanta is on the National Register of Historic Places. It would be difficult to find a community more closely linked to the city’s, state’s, region’s, and nation’s historical development than the West End district of Atlanta.

In this century, the West End has endured many changes in its metamorphosis to an intown community, while retaining its own distinctive character and vitality.

West End is also a pioneer community for the BeltLine project in Atlanta. With the Peachtree Corridor, the BeltLine, and MARTA, West End will be one of the most transit-oriented communities in Atlanta.
