Health Awareness

e would like to bring awareness to some different health issues which has plagued society for centuries. These below are only a few heath problems we would like to bring to light. If you are suffering form these problems always remember you are not alone. There are centers and facilities nationwide where help is available.

This segment is to make you aware and let you know that there are survivors and if you have these symptoms visit your nearest physician or medical center.

January:

Birth Defects Prevention Awareness Month - Each January the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raises awareness among women and families on actions they can take to help have a healthy baby. January is also a time to recognize people living with birth defects. Thanks to ongoing medical advances, children born with birth defects are living longer. These children and their families still need help. They often need specialized treatment, continued care, and strong social support to improve their overall quality of life. Read more ...

Blood Donor Month - National Blood Donor Month and recognizes the lifesaving contribution of blood and platelet donors. Read more ...

Cervical Health Awareness Month - Cervical Health Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about how women can protect themselves from HPV (human papillomavirus) and cervical cancer. HPV is a very common infection that spreads through sexual activity, and it causes almost all cases of cervical cancer.

About 79 million Americans currently have HPV. Many people with HPV don’t know they are infected. And each year, more than 11,000 women in the United States get cervical cancer. Read more ...

Glaucoma Awareness Month - National Glaucoma Awareness Month is an important time to spread the word about this sight-stealing disease.

Currently, more than 3 million people in the United States have glaucoma. The National Eye Institute projects this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030, a 58 percent increase. Read more ...

Thyroid Health Awareness Month - The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. Although relatively small, the thyroid gland plays a huge role in our body, influencing the function of many of the body’s most essential organs, including the heart, brain, liver, kidneys and skin. The thyroid’s job is to make thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. Thyroid hormone helps the body use energy, stay warm and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working as they should. World Leprosy Day - World Leprosy Day is observed internationally every year on the last Sunday of January to increase the public awareness of the Leprosy or Hansen’s Disease. This day was chosen in commemoration of the death of Gandhi, the leader of India who understood the importance of leprosy. Leprosy is one of the oldest recorded diseases in the world. It is an infectious chronic disease that targets the nervous system, especially the nerves in the cooler parts of the body – the hands, feet, and face. Read more ...

National Down Syndrome Awareness Month - Down syndrome (sometimes called Down’s syndrome) is a condition in which a child is born with an extra copy of their 21st chromosome — hence its other name, trisomy 21. This causes physical and mental developmental delays and disabilities.

 
 

February:

Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month - February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Low Vision Awareness Month. Age-Related Macular Degeneration / Low Vision Awareness Month is sponsored by Prevent Blindness America. ARMD is a disorder of the macula. The macula is the part of your retina where your central and color vision comes from. Read more ...

Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month - Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Heart Month (American) Month - Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices.

Brain Awareness Month - For more than three decades, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) has proudly led the nation in observing Brain Injury Awareness Month by conducting an engaging public awareness campaign in March of each year. Read more ...

Child Life Month - Established as a nonprofit organization in 1982, the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) advances the field of child life by establishing and maintaining professional standards, enhancing the professional growth and development of members, and advancing the credibility of the child life profession by fostering research and promoting the standards of child life practice on a national and international level.

The Association represents trained professionals with expertise in helping infants, children, youth, and families cope with the stress and uncertainty of illness, injury and treatment. ACLP is comprised of more than 5,000 individuals representing at least 600 organizations worldwide. Our members include Certified Child Life Specialists, child life assistants, university educators and students, hospital administrators and staff, school teachers, therapeutic recreation specialists, and professionals in related fields.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month - March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Alcohol Awareness Month - Founded and sponsored by NCADD, Alcohol Awareness Month was established in 1987 to help reduce the stigma so often associated with alcoholism by encouraging communities to reach out to the American public each April with information about alcohol, alcoholism and recovery. Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive disease, genetically predisposed and fatal if untreated. However, people can and do recover. In fact, it is estimated that as many as 20 million individuals and family members are living lives in recovery! Read more ...

Autism Awareness Month - Nearly a quarter-century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion, and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with ASD is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life.
